NFL Draft, Round 1: Lets’ Take a Look at the Most Interesting Picks of the Night.

The 2020 NFL Draft will forever go down in history as the league’s first (and hopefully last) “virtual” draft. As the global pandemic COVID-19 put the sports world on hold, the NFL made the decision that the show must go on, and obviously, made the most out of the situation at hand. With that being said, let’s dive into some of the most interesting picks the NFL GM’s made from home.

  • Tua Tagovailoa, QB – Miami Dolphins; 5th Overall Pick

After an impressive free agency period for the Miami Dolphins, it finally seems as if the organization is making moves towards becoming a threat in the AFC East. By drafting Tua Tagovailoa (Or Taglivioa, according to Rick Ross), the Dolphins are sending a message to the league, that they are ready to put the days of being one of the laughingstocks of the NFL behind them. There’s only one issue, and it is the frightening history of SEVEN injuries he suffered in only two years at Alabama, the most recent, and most devastating, being his hip dislocation back in November. Taking Tua at 5, to me, is a gamble, solely in part by the history of injuries he carries with him. On the bright side, it is hard to doubt that If, and when, Tua is healthy, he is an absolute baller, and could take the Dolphins above and beyond in the NFL.

  • Henry Ruggs III, WR – Las Vegas Raiders; 12th Overall Pick

Henry Ruggs is a speed demon, there is no other way to put it. Running a 4.27 40-yard dash at the Combine, along with a 42 inch vertical, the kid is an athletic freak. This pick may be a bit of a head scratcher though, because even with the tremendous athletic ability of Ruggs, the general consensus among NFL experts was Ceedee Lamb (more on him later), being the first receiver to go in the draft, some even predecting to the Raiders in this same pick. Although I would not say this pick was a “reach”, it was most definitely surprising to see Henry Ruggs come off the board before guys like Ceedee Lamb, and Jerry Jeudy.

  • Tristan Wirfs, OT – Tampa Bay Buccaneers; 13th Overall (Traded up from 14)

Among draft experts, Tristan Wirfs was projected to be the first two or three offensive tackles off the board, among a highly talented group in this year’s draft. After seeing Andrew Thomas, Jedrick Wills, and Mekhi Becton all go before Wirfs, GM Jason Licht pulled the trigger on a trade to send them up from 14 to 13, in the first round. There is no way for us to know if 49’ers GM John Lynch had his eyes on Tristan Wirfs, or if he was just bluffing to get Licht to bite on the trade. What we do know is that Tampa realized that protecting Tom Brady was worth giving up a 4th round pick in order to eliminate all risks of potentially missing out on their guy.

  • Ceedee Lamb, WR – Dallas Cowboys; 17th Overall

The highly touted prospect, and perceived best wide receiver out of a stacked class in this year’s draft, Lamb saw Henry Ruggs and Jerry Jeudy both go before him. Still on the board at 17, Jerry Jones did not pass up on the best available player, and selected the impressive receiver, to go along with Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup. There is no doubt the Cowboys got a steal with this pick. There is also no doubt that they have priorities at other positions. After a disappointing 8-8 season and missing the playoffs, all the Cowboys had to show for themselves was their #1 ranked offense in the league, that posted a whopping 6,900 yards. On the other side of the ball, losing their #1 defensive back, Byron Jones, in free agency poses a glaring hole in an already lackluster secondary, as well as other positions on defense that needed to be addressed by the Cowboys, that was not solved with their first round pick.

  • Jalen Reagor, WR – Philadelphia Eagles; 21st Overall

The Philadelphia Eagles came into the 2020 draft desperate for a wide receiver, after a season where Greg Ward Jr. caught the most passes for them out of the WR position down the stretch. Among speculation and rumors of the Eagles moving up to get a guy like Henry Ruggs, who they reportedly loved, there were also rumors of them having high thoughts of Jalen Reagor, who ran a 4.22 40-yard dash at his pro day, and has a 42 inch vertical, similar to Ruggs. Although he is not one of the bigger names that were available at receiver in the draft, the Eagles got the (beyond) speedy, explosive, dangerous, playmaker they needed out of the WR position to add some big play ability for Carson Wentz and the offense. Reagor, although not perfect, and not a “big name” receiver, has the potential to become great in the NFL, as we’re seeing now, from the likes of guys like Tyreek Hill, that speed kills at WR.

  • Jordan Love, QB – Green Bay Packers; 26th Overall (Traded up from 30)

Over the 17-year career of Aaron Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers have never selected a skill position (WR, RB, TE) player in the first round of the draft. This did not change after this year’s draft, as the Packers traded up four spots to select Rodgers’ (potential) predecessor, in Jordan Love. The Packers blatantly obvious disregard for selecting first round talent to help Rodgers and the offense shows its ugly head again in this seasons draft. Love, a projected 2nd round pick, seems to be who the Packers want to be the next in line, after the future hall of famer Aaron Rodgers, after giving up their 4th round pick to move up four picks in the first round. They leapfrogged the Titans, Seahawks, and Ravens, all of which have no need to select a QB in the first round. Personally, I’m baffled by this pick, and even more baffled by them trading up for it, and I can only imagine the frustration of Aaron Rodgers seeing the events unfold.

The first round of the first ever “virtual” NFL Draft did not lack excitement, and definitely did not lack interesting picks. The draft continues tonight, the 24th, with rounds 2 and 3, and rounds 4 through 7 on Saturday, the 25th.

Baseball’s Greatest Ballpark Traditions

In a game known as “America’s Past-Time”, there is sure to be some timeless traditions that loyal Baseball fans have been cherishing for years. One age old tradition, that is essentially universal in Baseball is the “7th-Inning stretch”. The origins of which is highly disputed, but one of the best origin stories floating in history highlights President William Taft needing to stretch out his sore body while enjoying a Washington Senators game in 1910, and fans deciding to follow along with their fellow President, as the originator of the famous tradition. To compliment the 7th-Inning Stretch is the singing of a song that is a part of the language of Baseball fans everywhere, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”.

It was not long after the stretch became a “thing”, for some teams in Baseball to create, and engrain fun traditions into their culture for the fans, and team alike to enjoy and carry on through time. Here are some of the greatest current, and old, traditions in Baseball:

Presidential Race – Washington Nationals:

Image result for nationals president race

Well, duh, what screams “AMERICA” more than a wacky, big-head mascot version of Mount Rushmore, racing through a ballpark in the 4th inning, in the Nation’s Capital. Since 2006, this is exactly what National’s fans love to see whenever they visit National’s Park.

Bernie Brewer’s Home Run Slide & Sausage Race – Milwaukee Brewers:

The Milwaukee Brewers have two awesome long-standing traditions that are major symbols of the Brewers franchise. The first is Bernie Brewers Home Run Slide, where since the early 1980’s, after each Brewers Home Run, Bernie Brewer takes a voyage down his slide, into a gigantic beer mug. The old rustic slide has since been replaced by a winding yellow slide, onto a large home plate, not beer mug.

The second of the classic Miller Park traditions is the famous “Sausage Race” that takes place in the 6th inning at every Brewers game since 1994. Similar to the Presidential Race in Washington, wacky mascot versions of sausages are pit against each other in an anything-goes race around the warning track at Miller Park. The Sausage Race is most definitely historic, but also has a dark shade of controversy. In 2003, Randall Simon of the Pittsburgh Pirates was arrested at the ballpark after purposely hitting one of the racers with a Baseball bat. The incident was sorted out, and later joked about the next time Simon visited Miller Park as a member of the Cubs.

Home Run Apple – New York Mets:

It is only fitting to have a literal Big Apple, celebrate Home Run’s hit in the “Big Apple”, AKA New York. This is exactly what the Mets had in mind when installing the iconic fixture at Shea Stadium in 1980. The Apple is meant to rise only when New York Mets players go yard, but an interesting exception took place in 1998, when the Yankees were forced to play a home game across town because of a building code violation at Yankee Stadium. During that game former Met Darryl Strawberry raised the Apple with a dinger, but only partially, as they raised it just up until the Mets logo was shown.

The Mets Home Run Apple has become one of the most important, and distinguishing parts of the franchise, so important in fact that in the season leading up to the Mets departure from Shea, to Citi Field, the team announced the Apple will be retired. In response, fans started a website to petition for the Apple to move to the new stadium with the team. Mets fans got what they wanted, as the team announced they would build a brand new Apple for their brand-new stadium, and kept history alive by placing the Apple from Shea Stadium outside of Citi Field.

Bleacher Creature’s Roll Call – New York Yankees:

The world-famous “Bleacher Creatures” at Yankee Stadium, in and of itself are an embodiment of the passion and culture of New York City, and how much they love their sports teams. Notoriously crazy, the Yankees Bleacher Creatures have possibly the most engaging tradition in all of Baseball, known as “Roll Call”.

How it works is simple, in the top of the 1st inning, the Bleacher Creature leader for that game will call out each Yankee in the field, until the player responds to the fans. Yankee’s players love this tradition, and love to give the passionate fans who dwell with the creatures of the bleachers, what they pay for.

Pesky Pole & Sweet Caroline – Boston Red Sox:

Arguably two of the most iconic traditions in Baseball, Bosox fans, and even tourists alike, flock to Fenway for not only the historic playing grounds, but the historic fixtures within the ballpark, and game.

Pesky Pole, name after Red Sox legend Johnny Pesky, is undoubtedly the most famous foul pole in Baseball, as well as the shortest in distance, at (arguably) 302 feet. The origins of the nickname is deeply engrained in Boston folk lore, and is arguable, but is known to come courtesy of Pesky’s teammate Mel Parnell. Since the “official” naming of the pole in 2006, fans and players alike pay homage to the Boston legend by immortalizing their signatures and messages onto the pole.

Red Sox fans are also delighted with the reciting of one of the catchiest songs in Baseball, “Sweet Caroline”. Prior to the bottom of the 8th inning at Fenway, fans gather and let loose for an infectious, and timeless recitation of Neil Diamond’s beautiful song.

“Throw it Back!” – Chicago Cubs:

A legendary tradition amongst Cubs fans, where not every fan may oblige, but they are surely encouraged to by the masses. When a hitter from the opposing team at Wrigley field hits a Home Run, repeated chants of “THROW IT BACK!” rips through the park, until the ball is flung back to its place of origin. Speaking of origins, this age-old tradition came to fruition in 1970, when a fan who caught a benchmark long-ball of Hank Aaron’s the season prior, once again found a ball that came off the bat of Hammerin’ Hank wind up in his hands. The fan threw the ball back on the field in disgust, because in the season prior, Hank Aaron refused to accept his 521st Home Run ball from him, as Aaron was upset at Cubs fans dumping beer on him.

Opening Day “Holiday” – Cincinnati Reds:

For a Century and a half and counting, the Cincinnati Reds are the only Baseball team that is granted to play at home on Opening Day. This tradition has become the sorts of an unofficial holiday in Cincinnati, which is celebrated with an annual parade at the famous Findlay Market. No matter how positive, or poor, the upcoming season’s outlook is, every year on Opening Day, none of that matters for Reds fans, as they celebrate and carry on one of the longest standing traditions in sports.

Cowboys place Franchise Tag on “Franchise Quarterback” Dak Prescott

After a drama filled, and highly disappointing season in “Jerry World”, Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys will again have the distraction of their “Franchise Quarterback” sticking his hands out for money all season.

Dak Prescott, a 4th round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, bursted on to the scene when Tony Romo suffered a back injury in a pre-season game, essentially ending his NFL career. Rookies Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot had the Cowboys offense booming and led the team to a 13-3 record. Dak and the ‘Boys subsequently took one of the most disappointing first-round Playoff exits in NFL history. Since then, Dak and the Cowboys have been arguably average, highlighted by an absolutely disappointing 8-8 record this past season.

Throughout all this, Dak has constantly reminded Cowboys ownership that he wants to be one of the highest paid QB’s in NFL history, with not much reason behind it. Dak reportedly turned down multiple $100 Million plus offers from the Cowboys, seeking at least $35 Million per year.

In a nutshell, that all leads us here, with Dak Prescott now being Franchise Tagged and now earning $33 Million from the Cowboys for one season, it begs the question, what’s next for Dak Prescott and the Cowboys? The relationship between Dak and Jerry Jones is quite obviously not too strong at this point, and I could imagine Dak being highly disappointed with no long-term contract extension at this point in career.

So, what does happen next? Does this spell the beginning of the end for Dak Prescott in Dallas? Does Jerry Jones back down and give Dak the record-breaking contract he is seeking? Does Dak back down and settle a less lucrative contract with the Cowboys?

Time will only tell, and one thing is for sure, this will carry a large distraction over the Cowboys season, as if they needed any more of those. Dak himself will also be playing to prove himself this season, showing his worth and backing up his claims to the mind-boggling contract he has been seeking. No matter the case, bring your popcorn to “Jerry World” this season.

Yanks’ Entering 2020 Season Banged Up

After yet another disappointing finish in the Postseason for the Yankees in 2019, falling in the ALCS to the (controversial) Astros in 6 games, the Yankees needed a spark to build some confidence heading into the 2020 season. Shortly after, the Yankees off-season kicked off with a resounding bang with the signing of star pitcher Gerrit Cole.

The addition of Cole immediately put the Yankees in the drivers seat, not only in the American League, but throughout Major League Baseball as a whole. The pinstripes were vaulted to the top of projections as World Series favorites for the upcoming season.

Just as Pitchers and Catchers began to report to Spring Training, the Yankees received news that seemingly began the domino effect of preseason injuries for the Bombers. The first to fall was James Paxton, who is currently sidelined till at least May following back surgery. After swallowing the pill of Paxton’s injury, the Yankees regrouped, with confidence still high as a result of Gerrit Cole walking out on the practice field in a Yankee Uniform, they then had to swallow an even tougher pill, with news of stud pitcher Luis Severino needing season-ending Tommy John surgery.

With 2 of their top starting pitchers down, the “injury bug” then crawled into the outfield at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa Bay. Still reeling from the news of Paxton and Severino, the Yankees took a crushing blow, learning they will be without star outfielders Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge for Opening Day.

Stanton is sidelined with a Calf injury, and has no real timetable for return. Judge is currently shut down for the next 2 weeks with a fractured rib. With the possibility of surgery looming, the slugger could be out for an extended period of time. These injuries, on top of Aaron Hicks still recovering from Tommy John surgery that he underwent in late October, leaves the Yankees outfield extremely shorthanded entering Opening Day.

With the injuries to their outfield, the Yanks’ will look to veteran Brett Gardner to “hold down the fort”, and younger prospects like Clint Frazier and Mike Tauchman to fill in for Stanton and Judge, while top prospect Estevan Florial continues to prepare for “the show”.

The Yankees are no strangers to star players going down with injuries. 2019 was a season defined by Yankees stars being hurt, and the “next man up” mentality delivering huge win after huge win for Aaron Boone and the boys. It seems like, at the very least, the early parts of the Yankees 2020 season will be defined by the “next man up” mentality again, and if those who are on the field in place of the injured stars can once again be “savages” in the box for Aaron Boone.

NFL Free Agent Carousel: Where Will the NFL’s Biggest Free Agents be Next Season?

Written by: Alan Shiram

With the NFL Combine wrapping up, and now less than a month away from the new league year, the whirlwind of Free Agency is upon us, and the speculation is intense. While a lot of “brand names” (a la Drew Brees) figure to stay put, here are some key players that are likely to be in some new threads next season.

QUARTERBACK:

Tom Brady, New England Patriots –

Brady is probably the biggest mystery as the 42-year-old is a free agent for the first time in his career. Brady was obviously not too happy with the lack of weapons at his disposal a season ago and New England is seemingly getting antsy to start fresh at quarterback, which appears as though both sides are headed for a divorce. Brady’s experience and championship pedigree will have teams lined up outside his doorstep to retain his services despite his age. For what it’s worth, it’s already been revealed that The Raiders are set to offer brady a 2 year, $60M contract.

Potential fits: Las Vegas, Tennessee, Chicago

Teddy Bridgewater, New Orleans Saints –

This might be Teddy B’s chance to finally cash in. by injury early in his career that prevented it from really getting off the ground, Teddy found himself in a backup role as Drew Brees’ potential successor after a brief stint with the Jets. However, after going 5-0 in his starts last season stepping in for an injured Brees, with Brees announcing he’ll be returning to New Orleans for another season, Bridgewater will likely be headed elsewhere and has earned himself a big payday in the open market.

Potential Fits: Chicago, Indianapolis, Carolina

Marcus Mariota, Tennessee Titans –

After yet another mediocre, sluggish start to the season for Mariota and the Titans, they decided to end that experiment and turn to 31-year-old Ryan Tannehill to run the offense. That he did, as he took the starting quarterback job and ran with it, fueling Tennessee all the way to the AFC championship game after a 2-4 start to the season. With that happening and Tennessee looking to snag Ryan long-term, there is simply no room for Mariota. It is safe to say the Mariota era in Tennessee has come and gone. Look for Marcus to weigh some starting options with many teams around the league going through shakeups at the quarterback position.

Potential fits: Chicago, Minnesota, Miami

Philip Rivers, Los Angeles Chargers –

The Chargers’ social media accounts posted thank you tribute videos thanking Phillip for all he’s done for the team, ensuring he’s all but gone. There are plenty of teams that could use Philip’s services, considering they believe he has enough left in the tank. I do. Although it was a down year for Rivers and the Chargers at large, Phillip still accounted for over 4,500 passing yards and 20+ TD passes; the latter in which he’s done in a whopping 14 straight seasons. Phillip can provide an instant starter with a winning pedigree to a team with quarterback uncertainty.

Potential fits: Tampa Bay, Indianapolis, New England

RUNNING BACK:

Lamar Miller, Houston Texans –

Coming off of a Torn ACL that ended his season before it began, the 2-time, 1,000 yard rusher should prove to be a bargain on the open market, probably only taking a short-term, prove-it deal to obtain his services. He can prove valuable in leading a multi-back committee similar to the one Kansas City had under Head Coach Andy Reid. Ideal fit: Kansas City.

Potential Fits: Jacksonville, Tampa Bay

Melvin Gordon, Los Angeles Chargers –

While sitting out almost half of a season due to a contract dispute with the Chargers, pint-sized backup Austin Ekeler completely lit up the scene and was among the best running backs in football. As a result, when Gordon came back there simply wasn’t enough snaps to be had for the role he was expecting; they couldn’t keep Ekeler off the field. Though Gordon probably burned his bridge in Los Angeles, Melvin should be greeted by a warm market considering he lowers his contract demands.

Potential fits: Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles (Rams)

Kareem Hunt, Cleveland Browns –

Hunt is an interesting one as he is trouble for opposing defenses on the field, however trouble for himself off the field as his off field antics and history has kept him from being ON the field. However, Cleveland decided to take a chance on the baggage and he delivered with a reliable set of hands in the passing game as a complement to Nick Chubb. Though Hunt is talented enough to dominate backfield touches, there might not be too many teams interested in committing to him. However, Hunt could prove to be a bargain on a short-term deal considering he keeps his off field antics to a severe minimum.

Potential fits: Miami, Houston, Indianapolis

WIDE RECEIVER

Amari Cooper, Dallas Cowboys –

Inconsistent as they came in Oakland, the disgruntled WR clearly needed a change of scenery. At the 2018 trade deadline, Dallas traded a first-round pick to acquire his services. Upon stepping on the field for Dallas, he became that instant #1 receiver and absolutely took off. A season and a half removed, a pro bowl nod and two 1,000-yard seasons later, Cooper approaches free agency this upcoming March and certainly won’t come cheap. One of the best route-runners in the game still in his prime, and Dallas still having to pay a few other important pieces including their quarterback, Cooper just might slip out of their price range if he hits the open market.

Potential fits: Philadelphia, Green Bay, New England, Indianapolis

Robby Anderson, New York Jets –

Coming off of another impressive season in which he again established himself as the Jets’ #1 receiver, Robby looks primed for a big payday in the open market. In a weak Free Agent WR class, Robby could be looking at a contract that eclipses over $13M a season. Robby held his own against top cornerbacks and the 26-year-old still appears to have plenty of good football left. He could prove to be even better than he was with the Jets if he decides to jump ship; he’ll have plenty of suitors who already have an established #1 WR. A match with Green Bay would be ideal fit as they have zero proven Wide Receiver talent outside of Devante Adams.

potential fits: Carolina, Philadelphia, Washington

A.J. Green, Cincinnati Bengals –

Coming off of a lost season in which Green didn’t play a single snap, Green limps to the open market with a proven resume but a big question mark in the health department. Nonetheless, he should have no shortage of suitors coming out of a bare-boned wide receiver market, considering he doesn’t resign with Cincinnati.

Potential Fits: New England, Cincinnati, Buffalo, New York Jets

Emmanuel Sanders, San Fransisco 49’ers –

After coming over from Denver in a mid-season trade, Sanders came out of the gates scorching hot with his new team before fading away behind target hogs Deebo Samuel and All-pro Tight End George Kittle. Still, Sanders has proven to be a great veteran presence and savvy route runner for Kyle Shanahan and the NFC-champion 49ers, and still appears to have enough juice left in those veteran legs.

Potential fits: Oakland, Green Bay, Indianapolis

Beshad Perriman, Tampa Bay Bucaneers –

Perhaps the biggest mystery of this upcoming free agency class is Wide Receiver Breshad Perriman, a former first round pick of the Baltimore Ravens. Labeled a colossal bust after doing absolutely nothing in Baltimore and being cut by the lowly Browns, his NFL future was hanging on by a thread before Bruce Arians and Co. decided to take a one year flier in Tampa Bay. He offered a few serviceable weeks while working third fiddle to The All-Pro talented receiver duo of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, however he absolutely exploded onto the scene when being abruptly thrust into the #1 role for the final three games of the season following season ending injuries to both Evans and Godwin alike. He went for over 100 yards in each game and scored four times, creating a great rapport with Jameis Winston in the process. Perriman looks poised to bank off of those performances alone, looking to smash the “bust” label off of his resume in the process.

Potential fits: New York Jets, Green Bay, Philadelphia

TIGHT END:

Eric Ebron, Indianapolis Colts ⁃

Just two seasons removed from hauling in a career best 13 Touchdown passes with Andrew Luck throwing him the football, Ebron suffered through a sharp dip in production last season in what was a throw-away of a season for him as a whole. He suffered through some nagging injuries and experienced a quarterback change; the quarterback who threw him each and every one of his 2018 touchdowns decided to abruptly retire. Furthermore, fellow Tight End Jack Doyle was finally healthy, and he seemed to be Jacoby Brissett’s preferred target of the two. The 26-year-old Ebron could prove to be an absolute steal for Tight End needy teams as he sets his sights on a steadier upcoming campaign.

Potential fits: Jacksonville, Chicago, New England

Darren Fells, Houston Texans –

A favorite in the scoring area for stud quarterback Deshaun Watson, Fells hit pay dirt seven times despite splitting time with Jordan Akins, and despite Bill O’Brien’s tendencies to veer away from using the Tight End. He doesn’t offer much in terms of YAC ability, but as a former basketball player he offers a sure set of hands and that “box-out” ability with a large catch radius; while being a capable blocker in the run game. Fells could be an option in the second tier of free agency once the “big fish” are off the board.

Potential fits: Carolina, Green Bay, New England

Los Angeles Antetokounmpo’s? Giannis to USA Today Sports: Antetokounmpo Brother Reunion in L.A. or Milwaukee “Would be Amazing”

Well Lakers fans, eat your hearts out. Not only do you have Lebron James and Anthony Davis under your roof at the same time. Now the “Greek Freak” Giannis Antetokounmpo just threw an absolute curveball to the NBA world with this statement to Mackenzie Salmon of USA Today Sports…

“I think that would be amazing. Obviously we’d spend more time together, and I’m 100 percent sure my mom would love that. But if we could like team up in a team in Milwaukee, L.A., wherever, that would be awesome.”

Giannis Antetokounmpo on playing alongside his brothers on the same team

First, we should pump the breaks on the hype train for a second. Giannis and his agent have made it clear on multiple occasions that as long as they are playing competitive Basketball, remaining in Milwaukee is obviously one of their most realistic options after the 2021 season. And the last time I checked, the Bucks sit atop the NBA with a 46-8 record. So I would say the odds of Giannis remaining with the Bucks long term with his older brother Thanasis is the more likely option to him suiting up in Purple and Gold at the Staples Center with his little bro Kostas.

To be fair, Giannis was simply answering a question during a media availability. Also, the answer he gave is pretty much what you would expect. It would be a dream come true for just about anyone to play alongside two of their brothers in the NBA, especially with the path it took for the Antetokounmpo brothers to make it to where they are today. Plus, you would score some points with Mom too for letting your brothers play with you.

On the flip side, this is 2020, and with the current state of social media, this thing is going to blow up like aluminum foil in the microwave. There are some technical hula-hoops to jump through before Giannis and company to the Lakers can actually happen. (Hint Hint: Anthony Davis). Make no mistake though, the speculation that is going to grow from this 20-second clip is going to be like an avalanche. This will be on sports fans minds for hours on end, and basketball fans everywhere will be going bonkers over this answer ultimately until Giannis decides to let the world know which team he will Basketball for in 2021 (Currently taking bets on whether it will be via ESPN special or Player Tribune article).

So, obviously this question and answer must be taken with a grain of salt, but also must be, and will be, taken seriously in the minds of sports fans going forward. Will the day come where we see the three current Antetokounmpo, and possibly fourth Antetokounmpo brother making his way up the ranks to the NBA as we speak, all hooping together in a Lakers jersey? Or any other jersey for that matter? Only time could tell. Regardless, grab your popcorn Basketball fans. The events that will unfold before our very eyes after this (possibly borderline tampering) response from Giannis Antetokounmpo will surely not disappoint.

My Take on this Year’s NBA All-Star Game Format

An overarching trend in the major professional sports leagues here in America are the dull, lackluster All-Star Games, in which no matter how many superstars you pile in to one building, fans are either bored out of their minds while watching it, or not watching it at all.

Prime suspects of putting their fans to sleep during their All-Star games are the NFL, and MLB. The NFL has completely lost their fans interest in their two-hand touch Football game they call the “Pro Bowl”, and the MLB has followed suit ever since taking away any incentive there was to winning the game, when they removed the rule of home field advantage in the World Series to the winning league.

Among the two leagues that have actually took their heads out of their rear sides and realized that change was in order were the NHL, and the NBA. The NHL made the change to a fast-paced and exciting 3 on 3 tournament style All-Star Games, which is actually three games across the whole day, and includes financial incentive for the players by way of large 1 Million Dollar check for the winning division. Speaking for myself here, the new NHL format introduced in 2016 has intrigued myself, an avid football fan, to watch the NHL’s All-Star game over the snooze fest that is the NFL’s Pro Bowl for the past few seasons.

In tribute to the late Kobe Bryant, the NBA introduced a new All-Star Game format this season, which replaced their old format of essentially having a pick-up game with the NBA’s most popular players in which not many fans really cared for, simply because the players themselves did not seem to care as much either. This season that all changed.

Bare with me here because the format is a little confusing to explain, but makes perfect sense in what the NBA was hoping for in terms of increasing the intesity of the game, and enticing players to highten their competitiveness during the game. In this years All-Star game each of the first 3 quarters were essentially 12 minute games, in which each team had the opportunity to win the quarter, and a donation to charity. The scores were reset after each of the 3 quarters, but not forgotten, as when the 4th quarter rolled around, the target score to win became 157. The target score was reached by adding 24 (shoutout Kobe, we miss you.) to the leading teams score, in this case Team Giannis’s 133.

Ultimately, this years NBA All-Star game was not only a bittersweet tribute to the late great Kobe Bryant and his Daugther Gianna, among the 7 other lives lost in the tragic accident. This years All-Star game was a breath of fresh air, and had the feel of a meaningful NBA game, with the players arguing with referees, Kyle Lowry taking not 1, but 2 charging fouls, as well as post game trash talk. Fan reaction was incredible as well, even though the general feeling towards the format change was confusing to say the least. I think the only person who took any issue with the format was Joel Embiid, who said after the game “you shouldn’t be able to win on a free throw”, but hey, I doubt that quote would exist if he were on the winning side.

Overall, the NBA did something that NFL fans wish their league would do. They took something that has so much potential to be a real attraction to fans, and made an ever so neccesary change to an event that was on its last breathe because of the lack of intensity the players brought to the game. At least for this season, the change revitalized the game, and even has fans like me looking forward to next seasons All-Star game.

NEW JERSEY DEVILS TRADE 5 YEAR CAPTAIN ANDY GREENE TO CROSS TOWN RIVAL ISLANDERS; ALSO SEND BLAKE COLEMAN TO TAMPA

In a move that was somewhat unexpected, the New Jersey Devils have cut ties to their 5 year captain Andy Greene and have shipped him off to the New York Islanders in return for David Quenneville. The Devils also sent fan favorite Forward Blake Coleman, nicknamed “pickles”, to the Tampa Bay Lightning for rookie Forward Nolan Foote and a 1st round draft pick.

Fan reaction to the trade of their Captain Andy Greene was mixed, but fans were not happy when the news of the trade of Coleman broke. As one fan wrote “I’m going to cry myself to sleep at this point.”

The outlook is trending down in Jersey, as they are suffering yet another brutally disappointing season, which has seen the addition of star players like P.K. Subban and Wayne Simmonds and first round draft pick Jack Hughes result in the termination of General Manager Ray Shero, Head Coach John Hynes, and former MVP Taylor Hall.

The Devils are on their way to missing the playoffs 7 out of 8 seasons since reaching the Stanley Cup Finals and ultimately going home empty handed in 2012.

MLB Network ranks Gerrit Cole higher than Jacob DeGrom in their “Top 100 Right Now”

Over the Course of this week MLB Network has been releasing its own version of what they think is the 100 best players in the game of Baseball right now. Yesterday they released 10 through 1 in their countdown and in somewhat of a surprise (to me at least), and to the delight of Yankees fans, they have ranked Gerrit Cole (7) higher than Jacob DeGrom (8) in their list.

I think now is a good time to let everyone know that I am a big Jacob DeGrom fan, and an even bigger fan of the New York Mets. Let’s get one thing clear, that is NOT why I believe DeGrom is a better pitcher than Cole.

I believe most peoples arguments to rebuke MLB Networks ranking would be the easiest one to make. DeGrom’s back to back Cy Young awards, compared to Cole’s whopping 0 Cy Young awards. That alone should be good enough to have DeGrom ranked higher than Cole in this list. He was named the best pitcher in the National League by way of the Cy Young award not only this season, but the previous season as well. So how is he not the best pitcher in Baseball right now? I don’t believe there is enough of an argument to support MLB Network’s ranking.

Lets take a look at DeGrom and Cole’s ERA (Earned Run Average), WHIP (Walks Hits over Innings Pitched), and WAR (Wins Above Replacement) in the 2019 season, as well as their career totals.

2019 Stats/CareerJacob DeGromGerrit Cole
ERA2.43/2.622.50/3.22
WHIP0.971/1.0530.895/1.192
WAR 7.9/34.96.8/24.0

“The proof is in the pudding” said someone a long time ago, not really sure who. But I believe that applies here. If all we have in our recent memory is Gerrit Cole’s stellar performance in the 2019 playoffs, obviously we are going to be high on him. We need to dig just a bit deeper to understand why DeGrom has the edge over Cole, and why the crosstown rivalry is not starting with DeGrom as the underdog.

Gerrit Cole is a pitcher who the Pittsburgh Pirates gave up on and shipped off to Houston because he wasn’t able to get his ERA under 4 and was only able to post a sub 3 ERA in 1 of his first 5 seasons. That is not indicative of a pitcher who can be ranked above DeGrom, who only posted ERA’s over 3 in 2 of his 6 seasons, and posted an eye popping 1.70 ERA only two seasons back. If we get a bit more advanced in our analytical analysis, we clearly see DeGrom’s estabished domincance in his 34.9 WAR, a whole 10.9 points over Cole’s 24.0. This is a great marker in showing how DeGrom’s value as a pitcher to any team is greater than Cole’s over the course of their careers.

In my most humble opinion, I believe MLB Networking ranking Gerrit Cole over Jacob DeGrom in their Top 100 Players Right Now list was an irresponisble decision, which was made with pure hype instead of numbers, and will be looked back at as a “freezing cold take”.

Wildly Re-Imagining Parity in the NBA

If you have been following the NBA since 2011, you are aware of the issue that is currently plaguing the league and (most) of its fans. I put “most” in parentheses there because if you are a Heat, Cavaliers, or Warriors fan, and yes, you too, Raptors fans, you’ve had your fun in the last 8 or so seasons of basketball. The issue is felt most in the fanbases of the other 26 teams in the NBA. It’s hard to deny that each season since Lebron James and Chris Bosh joined Dwayne Wade and the Heat in 2011 fans have gone into each season with the mindset that no other team will be able to beat either the Heat from 2011-2014, or the Warriors and Cavs from 2015-2019. Any true basketball fan understands there is not real parity within the NBA, and even this season, with all the injuries to the Golden State Warriors, we can still essentially point out that either either team in LA, or someone named Giannis, are the finals favorites this season.

Well, to address this issue, I have concocted a hypothetical, and obnoxiously unrealistic plan, that would restore order, and throw a jolt of excitement back into NBA Basketball. The general idea of this plan is to remove the factor of having a clear-cut favorite to win the finals before a season. Like I said before, since Lebron and Bosh joined D-Wade on the Heat in 2011 and won not 1, but 2, NBA Championships, and then the rise of the “Splash Bros’” Steph Curry and Klay Thompson in 2015, who tacked on another three titles of their own, we have seen only two teams not named the Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, or Cleveland Cavaliers win an NBA title, and those are the Dallas Mavericks, and Toronto Raptors (against the Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson-less Warriors). I believe the recent streak of Lebron James appearing in 8 straight NBA Finals paint the picture as well as it needs to be painted.

So now that we are clear on the problem, lets discuss the solution. Keep in mind this is purely hypothetical, and just an outside the box idea. To start, let’s take a look at the standings prior to the 2020 All Star Game.

Let’s go out a limb here and say every team that is non-competitive and below the 8th seed in each conference will be forced to secede from the league and make their top players available to the teams that remain competitive in the NBA. For the sake of argument, lets exclude the Warriors for obvious reasons. From this, we have a pool of 32 of the league’s premier players, whose talents are effectively being wasted on teams who fail to compete against the league’s top dogs. Let’s take a look at this pool of players.

With our plan there would be 16 teams remaining in contention after the all-star break, and if we do the math right, 32 players are good enough for all 16 teams to get 2 of them each. With that being said, let’s have a draft! The pool of 32 players will be drafted in 2 rounds, with the weakest teams of the bunch receiving the top picks. Simple stuff, right? After the draft there will be 8 teams remaining in each conference, and to make things even more interesting, only 6 of those 8 will make the playoffs from each conference.

The idea itself may be a bit much to wrap your head around, and rightly so, but think of it this way. In an attempt to restore order to the NBA, and even force some organizations hands in becoming more competitive, we take the leagues bottom of the barrel teams, and we put them elsewhere. Where do we put them? Doesn’t matter, just not within our realm of the NBA anymore. After that we pull a pool of 32 players from those teams, who are most definitely part of the NBA’s top players and enter them in a draft for the remaining 16 teams who will be competitive moving forward and reduce the number of teams in the playoffs to 12 teams. Easy.

What does this do for the league and its fans exactly? Good question. By taking talents that include rising superstars, and established veterans from the NBA’S bottom feeders who refuse to be competitive year in and year out, and redraft them to the NBA’s playoff contenders, we (by way of total anarchy, but don’t mind that) essentially level the playing field between the NBA’s elite teams, and bring a fun, wild, and eye popping change to a league that so desperately needs one. With these changes in place, any team that is strong enough to remain, now has just as much of a chance to hoist the Larry O’Brien Championship trophy at the conclusion of the NBA season.
